If your business prints checks, you have likely heard about MICR toner. But what exactly is it, and why is it so important? MICR stands for Magnetic Ink Character Recognition, a technology that has been used by banks and financial institutions for decades to process checks quickly and accurately.
How MICR Toner Works
Unlike regular laser toner, MICR toner contains iron oxide particles that can be magnetized. When a check printed with MICR toner passes through a check reader or sorter, the machine detects the magnetic signal produced by the ink and reads the account number, routing number, and check number printed at the bottom of the check.
Why Regular Toner Is Not Enough
Standard toner cartridges do not contain iron oxide, which means checks printed with regular toner will fail MICR readers. Banks can reject these checks, causing delays and additional processing costs for your business. Using certified MICR toner ensures that every check you print meets ANSI and ABA standards.
Choosing the Right MICR Toner
Not all MICR toner cartridges are created equal. Look for products that are ANSI X9.27 and ABA certified. At eMICR, all of our cartridges meet these standards and are compatible with leading printer brands including Brother, HP, Lexmark, Canon, and more.
